I recently wrote our editor, Melissa Noble (mnoble@salon.com), to request that toritto's blog be reinstated. Though I am sure it has been sent to the Powers That Be at Open Salon, I copied toritto's explanation from Jonathan Wolfman's blog into my email to her and asked that it be seriously considered for reinstatement.
I don't know if toritto wants to continue on at Open Salon if granted that chance. I hope it will be granted to him at the very least and he will be free to decide.
I feel as a member of Open Salon the treatment of toritto was unfair and I want and need to protest that not only for his sake but for my own and the rest of us.
They say a family or community behaves like a hanging mobile of connected parts and when one part gets jarred then the entire mobile shakes. I felt that jarring happening to us profoundly over Jake Sugarman's Plagiarism blog and the disappearance of toritto's blog and comments. It was and is especially jarring to those of us who rely on, respect and enjoy Frank's/toritto's contributions and communications.
I think in a healthy system writing the governance of a community with grave concerns is appropriate, helpful and natural. Being respected and responded to in an empathetic and reasonable way is at least to be hoped for. A healthy dynamic to be encouraged here!
I am exercising my hope and right as a citizen to express my opinion and my support for Frank to Ms. Noble. I believe the more of us who do this, the louder will be the message.
I encourage you to either write mnoble@salon.com and/or others as Safe Bet Amy suggested when this incident first broke out or feel free to add your support for Frank's reinstatement to the thread below and I will forward this link to Melissa Noble in a couple days.
There is strength in numbers and in cooperation, organization and community.

Didn't Oprah give James Frey another chance? Granted he pulled one over on everyone but I believe everyone deserves a second chance.
Good on you Libby.
Good on you Libby.
Petitioning would be fine, however as I know Toritto, a good and loyal friend of mine, I doubt he'd want to return, here, based on the INCREDIBLY shabby way he was treated.
Whoever is running the show here should take a long hard look in the mirror.
When I posted a blog which had a quote by a third party in the title with a four letter word jakie (presumably) didn't like, it was unceremoniously yanked with a PM warning that I'd be banned if that word appeared in a title on any post of mine in the future.
Googling showed that others had directly used the same word in their title at least three other times during jake's tenure, with nary a word voiced by jakie.
Something rotten exists in orphans of open salon, and I know who she is.
Anyway, if jake has so much time to hang at orphans, why doesn't he have time to do his job, here?
I have said that israel (and america) are determined to destroy themselves via a thousand self inflicted wounds.
open sewer seems to have that same self-destructive wish.

While I'm not going to write, for the reasons I've laid out elsewhere, I appreciate Libby's reasoned and un-shrill approach in this post.

I'm not sure what the reference to orphans is about, but I do feel that this site is probably not worth saving now. Too damn bad, but it happens all the time in the business world - Sick transit Gloria, Monday.
I agree absolutely, whether Frank will willingly return or not, that a direct appeal is worthwhile. But I wonder at a blog site that management requires this type of vocal instrument. Are they so unresponsive to the unanimous anger of Frank's obliteration that they are totally unaware of the intense discussion in multiple blogs about this major screw-up? Aren't they even a bit ashamed at attacking a valuable and decent and basically innocent contributor?
My guess is that you'll first need a petition asking OS staff to respond to petitions (and emails and PMs).
I've tried several times to communicate with OS management, but no one ever gets back to me. I guess you have to copy one of Joan Walsh's articles in order to get their attention.

Anything is possible, just because there hasn't been a response yet, doesn't mean there might not be. I contacted Ms. Noble about my other account and two days later she sent a nice note saying it had been reinstated, unfortunately it was this account that got "fixed." I simply can't remember which junk email account I used to register so I let it go. I did put "deleted account" in the subject line so perhaps that was why she noticed it immediately.
Let's see. Maybe it helps.
I think that there have been so many different problems here that toritto just became a victim of several things.
I think that toritto's explanation is completely plausible and that the blog should be reinstalled.

will do. This is ridiculous. He was one of the few writing about scary stories that need to get told.
